Tires and tubes

Overview

Tire choice is the single most underrated decision in EUC setup. A stock CST Cheng Shin tire is fine for the first 500-1000 km, but most riders eventually swap for either better wet grip, less rolling resistance, or a knobby pattern for off-road. The sizing conventions are specific: EUC tires are typically 16x2.5, 18x2.5, 18x3, 20x3, 20x3.25, or 20x4.25 depending on the wheel chassis. The inner tube sizing has to match.

The brand names riders recognize: CST for stock replacement on most wheels, Seyoun NJK for street touring with good wet grip and low noise, Chaoyang for budget-friendly street pattern, H-5102 for rain-weather commuter work, and a few specific knobby patterns from K-Rad and Kenda for off-road trails. The tube decision is less dramatic. Heavy-duty tubes (2.5-3mm thickness) survive pothole impacts better and are the default for touring wheels. Standard (1.5-2mm) is fine for lighter commuter use and saves a few hundred grams. Tubeless conversion kits exist for some chassis but are finicky to set up on wheels designed for tube-type operation. Most riders stay with tubes.
