Overview

Body protection is what keeps an EUC rider walking after the inevitable fall. Experienced riders almost universally wear wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads at minimum. Riders who go faster add back protectors, hip padding, and motorcycle-style crash-rated gear. The upgrade path roughly follows speed: commuter setup at 20-30 km/h needs less than touring setup at 50+ km/h, which needs less than aggressive flagship riding at 70 km/h.

The brands riders reach for: Leatt for knee and elbow pads with good mobility, TSG for wrist guards that actually fit hands used to grabbing a wheel, Dainese and Alpinestars for motorcycle-grade jackets and back protectors, POC for lighter weight summer options, and IXS for mid-range value. Wrist guards deserve separate mention. EUC falls almost always involve the rider trying to catch themselves with hands. A bare hand breaks a wrist at 20 km/h fall speed. A decent wrist guard with integrated splint plate (Flexmeter, Hillbilly, TSG DH) prevents that. For the 40-60 euro price, it is the single highest-value gear purchase after the helmet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum protection for EUC riding?

Helmet, wrist guards, knee pads. A new rider learning the wheel will fall at least 5-10 times in the first month, and without these three items those falls produce injuries. Elbow pads come next, typically within the first year.

Are motorcycle jackets overkill for EUCs?

For commuter speeds, yes. For sustained riding above 50 km/h, a motorcycle mesh jacket with back protector, shoulder and elbow armor is genuinely appropriate. The abrasion resistance of cotton or athletic wear at 60 km/h is effectively zero. Skin does not like asphalt at those speeds.

Which wrist guards work with EUC riding posture?

Look for integrated splint plate wrist guards that do not restrict finger movement: Flexmeter, Hillbilly Sports, TSG DH. Avoid skateboard-style wrist guards with rigid dorsal splints that interfere with steering on an EUC. Snowboard wrist guards are also a poor fit because the splint is oriented wrong.

How hot are body protection layers in summer?

Depends on material. Mesh jackets and ventilated knee pads work well in 25-30 degree weather. Full motorcycle leather is punishing above 30 degrees. Many riders keep two setups: light summer gear for commuter use and heavier winter gear with more coverage.

Does OneRide stock children-sized protection?

For wrist guards and smaller MTB knee pads yes, we carry youth sizes from Leatt and POC. For motorcycle-grade jackets and pants, adult sizing only. EUCs are not really appropriate for under-16 riders, so youth motorcycle-grade is not a large part of the market.

What is a CE Level 2 back protector?

European standard for back armor. Level 1 absorbs at least 9 kN of transmitted force. Level 2 absorbs at least 18 kN, roughly twice as protective, and is what motorcycle racers wear. For EUC riders above 50 km/h, Level 2 is the reasonable choice.
